Frequently asked questions
Is it a slip-cover? No. And yes. If you order a custom from any of the participating manufacuters, this is a pre-market product that is sent to the carrier manufacturer to use in the assembly of the carrier. The carrier is not altered from its original design since the panel is used in the original assembly by the manufacturer. If you already have a me tai or soft structure carrier that you use and love (that has no seat darts or a hood), I am currently in the process of testing a YOUR Pockets slip cover. More details as they come about, but if you'd like to follow all the latest, you can join our Facebook page.
What carrier brands can I get it on? Olives & Applesauce, Robyn's Nest, and Dream Carriers, LLC. We are also working with additional manufacturers to fit our design on their carrier.
What do I need pockets for? Some people find it cumbersome to carry a diaper bag and even a purse while wearing their baby. With the addition of pockets and some minimilist thinking, you can head out with your baby tied on and your keys, diaper, ID, debit/credit card, some lip balm and even a diaper and wipes. We're all looking to make life a little simpler and this is just one tool that helps you do that!
How does it work? If you mean how do the pockets work, they work fabulously! Just like great pockets should! As for the system of getting YOUR own YOUR Pockets, you purchase a custom slot from the manufacurer and then come purchase my service. You then send me your fabric (yardage is specific to the carrier) which I assemble into the pocket panel and send on to the manufacturer. The manufacturer assembles the carrier and sends it to you! It's that easy!
What kind of fabric do I need? Quilters' cotton fabrics work best. There are several layers of fabric in some places and thicker fabrics get bulky and awkward.
Do you have any design tips? I recommend you pick a favorite larger print design for the main fabric and a complementary smaller print or even a solid color for the pockets. Finding fabric collections you like is very helpful since they are deisgned together to go together. If you are shopping online, Etsy sellers are fabulous for showing you your options. So are the fabric companies themselves. Go visit your local quilt store! Then you get to feel the faric and play with it in person. If you need help deciding, I'm happy to give you some feedback!
Is it one big pocket? You have the option of one big pocket, or on many carriers, two seperate pockets. It mostly depends on the body size of the carrier.
Can I really fit stuff in there? YES! You can definitely fit your keys, cell phone, a diaper (even a cloth diaper) a baggie of wipes, a binky, and even your wallet and checkbook if they aren't too large. The pocket size does depend on the brand of carrier, but I strive to make it functional and work to design the pocket so your stuff doesn't just slid out.
Will my stuff fall out? Like any pocket, it could. But, like I said, I have made a point to design these so they are functional. There is also a loop sewn into each side so you can clip keys or wallet or toy or binky or whatever you feel needs to be secured to the carrier.
Can I get to the pockets if my baby is on my back? Yes and maybe. It depends on the brand of carrier mostly. But yes, most of them you can reach into the pockets to retrieve your stuff.
Won't my stuff jab my baby in the back? This has not been my experience at all. The pocket is the top layer of the carrier and many carriers will have two or more substantial layers between your stuff and your baby. Plus, most of your stuff will sit at about diaper level, which adds more padding. If you are worried that something might poke or jab your baby, try using one of the loops to attach the item and dangle it outside the pocket.
How do I use the loop? Does it come with some sort of clippy thing? The loop does not come with a clippy thing. That would require absurd testing on my part for an item that you can buy for less than a dollar at nearly any store you set foot in. And if you are lucky, you can find one that matches the prints you chose.
I'm a manufacturer. How do I hook up with your service? Send me an email (heidi@yourpockets.net) and I'll send you a list of what I need. The process isn't hard or expensive.
As a manufacturer, what are my options? You can choose to use my service for customers who puchase custom carriers from you, you can offer it to retailers as exclusives, and (soon) you can purchase a license and produce them yourself.
What if I want to manufacture it for my carrier? I am currently working on trademarking the idea and have plans to license it out. Email me if you would like more information about this, too! (heidi@yourpockets.net)
